March 16,  2015 – Back to Mondays

Regular meeting from 4-8pm.

Scrap Therapy Begins – Introduce the Scrap Quilt Block Swap – signups, explanations, block construction demo.

  • At the Christmas Party we had a Fabric exchange for our Scrap Therapy 2015 Block Swap – 5 1/2 inch squares cut from 100% Quilter’s Quality COTTON (no flannel) squares – jewel tone medium to dark medium (prints, plaids, solids, tone on tone, etc) – fabric CANNOT have any white in it.) UPDATE –Okay girls. So I went home and thought about the block exchange. We are doing Scrap therapy so we need to use up scraps. I looked at the pattern and came up with a different way to cut ONE 5.5 inch block to get what we need. (See pictures below). I think at Christmas you can bring as many or as few 5.5 inch squares as you want. They can be all the same, all different, it’s up to you. We’ll lay them out like last year and let everyone swap. Just take as many as you brought. If you bring 30, take home 30. Cutting this way means we don’t need two of them so we can be scrappier!!! The pattern for the block swap we’ll be doing in March and April 2015 is in the book Simple Strategies for Block Swap Quilts. It’s the Tipsy 9 Patch in the back of the book. We’ve also talked about doing a black on black fabric 2.5 inch strip exchange in March so we can scrap up our black fabs, too.

Themed Show and Tell – As well as UFOs, share our Morning Glory Block Swap quilts to generate excitement about the Scrap Quilt Block Swap OR share any quilt you’ve made that came from a block swap

Draw for a UFO Gift Certificate Winner – Winners were Angi Wiggins and Roxanna Flint

Dinner: Thanks to Kathleen Thompson, Pogie and Theresa Morrow for bringing dinner in March.

April  13. 2015 – Monday

Regular meeting from 4-8pm. (*See schedule below). Bring your own projects to sew!

Round Robin – It’s an Exchange Night! Bring in those Round Robin boxes!

Draw for a UFO Gift Certificate Winner – Bring your UFO’s.  We’ll have Show and Tell and you have a chance to win a gift certificate if you’ve paid your dues for the year and finished a quilt in the last month to share with us.

Themed Show and Tell – As well as UFO’s, share your Loose Threads Pioneer Samplers (2003) OR bring any sampler quilt you’ve made or have. Our winners in April were: Cheryl Allen and Cathy Criger.

Dinner for April: Thanks to Lisa Roskam, Kim White and Donna Schilling for bringing dinner in April.

Scrap Therapy – It was decided to take two months to make our exchange blocks so we’ll be exchanging in May.

  • So far we have 7 ladies signed up to participate:  Lisa Roskam, Roxanna Flint, Angi Wiggins, Joan Pogon-Cord, Sandy Duxbury, Donna Schilling and Cheryl Allen. Do we want to just provide one block or two blocks each for the exchange?
  • There is an error in the book’s instructions.  In the strip piecing instructions it says to trim your blocks to 8.5 x 8.5.  This is wrong.  Blocks will be trimmed to 9×9 and finish 8.5 x 8.5.  We are exchanging our blocks rough (apx 9.5 x 9.5) and letting the new owner of the blocks do the trimming after the exchange.
  • The pattern for the block swap we’ll be doing in March, April and May 2015 is in the book Simple Strategies for Block Swap Quilts. It’s the Tipsy 9 Patch pattern in the back of the book using the Crossroads to Jericho block. There’s two different ways in the book to put the blocks together into a quilt top – straight and on point.
  • Fabrics for blocks – Black is black on black print. Colors need to be 100% Quilter’s Quality COTTON (no flannel) – jewel tone medium to dark medium (prints, plaids, solids, tone on tone, etc) – fabric CANNOT have any white in it.

May 11. 2015 – Monday

Regular meeting from 4-8pm. (*See schedule below). Bring your own projects to sew!

Scrap Therapy – Do we have any volunteers to lead us in another scrappy project in 2015?? Or do we just want to do our own thing?

Round Robin – It is NOT an exchange night. Be working on those projects if you are part of our 2014/2015 Round Robin

Draw for a UFO Gift Certificate Winner – Bring your UFO’s. We’ll have Show and Tell and you have a chance to win a gift certificate if you’ve paid your dues for the year and finished a quilt in the last month to share with us. Our winners in May were Diane Cole and Kris Gruben.

Themed Show and Tell – I keep forgetting to bring these! but… As well as UFO’s, share the quilt that was made for you by another Loose Threads member when they picked a bag filled with your fabric in the Christmas 2006 exchange OR share a gift quilt someone else made for you.

Dinner for April: Thank you Cathy Criger, Margo Amero and Angi Wiggins for our May dinner. Margo did an amazing job with the soft tacos!

Scrap Therapy – For the 7 ladies who signed up to do the Scrap Block Swap ( Lisa Roskam, Roxanna Flint, Angi Wiggins, Joan Pogon-Cord, Sandy Duxbury, Donna Schilling and Cheryl Allen) – We are exchanging blocks this month. Please bring your 12 exchange blocks with you – 2 for each woman involved (not counting yourself.) If you didn’t sign up for this, I’m sorry, you cannot participate as the other participants will not be bringing enough blocks to share.

  • Remember: There is an error in the book’s instructions.

Loose Threads Special Meeting on June 8, 2015

On Monday, June 8 we will have a special class OFF SITE from 4-8pm.

Come to a Fabric Dyeing Workshop with Cheryl Johnson – At the May meeting, Cheryl came and showed us samples of what we could do with fabric dyeing and 10 of us signed up to learn the process with Cheryl at her home in Golden Hills -19813 Breeze Place. We will NOT be meeting at the church on June 8.  The class takes a couple of hours.  There is no mixing of dyes, etc.  Cheryl takes care of all that.  You move from color station to color station and simply dye your fabrics.

Supplies & Preparation Needed:  Do the following prep. Everyone needs:

  • 12 one-gallon size ziplock bags.  Label each bag 1-12 with Sharpie pen.
  • 3 yards of white fabric cut into 12 fat quarters. (quality muslin, white on white, white with dots – Cheryl showed some interesting results with white on white fabrics.  Since the white is painted on the dye only sticks to the background leaving the painted part white. Dots were cute, too.)
  • Plastic dish pan
  • Rubber gloves
  • Wear old clothes and shoes
  • Pick up special detergent and soda ash from Cheryl before class.
  • Pre-wash your fabric in special detergent before the workshop
  • The morning of the workshop, soak your fabric in soda ask mixture at least 15 minutes before coming to her house (If you arranged with Cheryl to purchase fabric made for dyeing she will prep it for you.)

Cheryl’s info: 823-1609 or email her at tedcbreeze@hotmail.com

NO Round Robin – It was scheduled to be an exchange night but we aren’t meeting at the church so let’s exchange in July instead.

NO Show & Tell, NO UFO winners and NO dinner in June.

Many thanks to Cheryl Johnson for the fabric dyeing class in June. – It was awesome.  I can’t wait to see the quilts that come from these fabrics! Here’s some pics of the fun.

New Theme for the Second Half of 2015

At our annual Christmas party we usually have a drawing for prizes to award those that finished our challenge quilts for the year.  This year at Christmas you can share your Round Robin Quilt, February’s Mystery Quilt or the quilt you make from our Scrappy Block exchange. (Last year we had the Mystery, the Eye Spy and the Block of the Month to share.)

I was wondering if we want to call an end to Scrap Therapy for 2015 and have a new challenge for the rest of the year – The Row by Row Experience. Each of us could bring a Row quilt to share at the Christmas Party. See the California Row by Row Experience on Facebook for ideas.

Gals have already been collecting patterns. If you want to swap and share, bring what you have gathered to the BBQ or the next meeting in August.

IDEAS FOR 2015

Loose Threads Scrap Therapy – January through June

We want to do Scrap Therapy in 2015 and need some volunteers to share ideas of what to do with scraps. Be on the lookout for pictures of quilts that fit the Scrap Therapy theme. If you’re on Pinterest, here’s a link to some pics Angi has collected.

Themed Show and Tell in 2015 (finished in May)

Ladies are always asking what Loose Threads has done in the past (our history) so what if the old time Loose Threaders brought projects we’ve done in the past to share with our new ladies?  We’ve already talked about starting the new year with a couple of Friday night sew-a-thon meetings to make the Queen Bee bag and to do another Mystery Quilt then it’s on to Scrap Therapy!
