Loose Threads – June 8, 2015

Loose Threads Special Meeting on June 8, 2015

On Monday, June 8 we will have a special class OFF SITE from 4-8pm.

Come to a Fabric Dyeing Workshop with Cheryl Johnson – At the May meeting, Cheryl came and showed us samples of what we could do with fabric dyeing and 10 of us signed up to learn the process with Cheryl at her home in Golden Hills -19813 Breeze Place. We will NOT be meeting at the church on June 8.  The class takes a couple of hours.  There is no mixing of dyes, etc.  Cheryl takes care of all that.  You move from color station to color station and simply dye your fabrics.

Supplies & Preparation Needed:  Do the following prep. Everyone needs:

  • 12 one-gallon size ziplock bags.  Label each bag 1-12 with Sharpie pen.
  • 3 yards of white fabric cut into 12 fat quarters. (quality muslin, white on white, white with dots – Cheryl showed some interesting results with white on white fabrics.  Since the white is painted on the dye only sticks to the background leaving the painted part white. Dots were cute, too.)
  • Plastic dish pan
  • Rubber gloves
  • Wear old clothes and shoes
  • Pick up special detergent and soda ash from Cheryl before class.
  • Pre-wash your fabric in special detergent before the workshop
  • The morning of the workshop, soak your fabric in soda ask mixture at least 15 minutes before coming to her house (If you arranged with Cheryl to purchase fabric made for dyeing she will prep it for you.)

Cheryl’s info: 823-1609 or email her at tedcbreeze@hotmail.com

NO Round Robin – It was scheduled to be an exchange night but we aren’t meeting at the church so let’s exchange in July instead.

NO Show & Tell, NO UFO winners and NO dinner in June:  Thank you Cathy Criger, Margo Amero and Angi Wiggins for our May dinner. Margo did an amazing job with the soft tacos! Annette Weisenseel and Sherrie Perez were scheduled in June – can we move you to another month?

Loose Threads – May 11, 2015

May 11. 2015 – Monday

Regular meeting from 4-8pm. (*See schedule below). Bring your own projects to sew!

Scrap Therapy – Do we have any volunteers to lead us in another scrappy project in 2015?? Or do we just want to do our own thing?

Round Robin – It is NOT an exchange night.  Be working on those projects if you are part of our 2014/2015 Round Robin

Draw for a UFO Gift Certificate Winner – Bring your UFO’s.  We’ll have Show and Tell and you have a chance to win a gift certificate if you’ve paid your dues for the year and finished a quilt in the last month to share with us. Our winners in April were: Cheryl Allen and Cathy Criger

Themed Show and Tell – I keep forgetting to bring these! but… As well as UFO’s, share the quilt that was made for you by another Loose Threads member when they picked a bag filled with your fabric in the Christmas 2006 exchange OR share a gift quilt someone else made for you.

Dinner for April:  Cathy Criger, Margo Amero and Angi Wiggins are scheduled to bring our May dinner. (If June would work better for you to bring dinner, Angi is willing to swap.) Thanks to Lisa Roskam, Kim White and Donna Schilling for bringing dinner in April. We need more ladies to sign up to help with dinner in the coming months.  Three ladies per night would be excellent! Who will help Annette Weisensell and Sherrie Perez in June?

Scrap Therapy – For the 7 ladies who signed up to do the Scrap Block Swap ( Lisa Roskam, Roxanna Flint, Angi Wiggins, Joan Pogon-Cord, Sandy Duxbury, Donna Schilling and Cheryl Allen)  – We are exchanging blocks this month. Please bring your 12 exchange blocks with you – 2 for each woman involved (not counting yourself.)  If you didn’t sign up for this, I’m sorry, you cannot participate as the other participants will not be bringing enough blocks to share.

  • Remember: There is an error in the book’s instructions.  In the strip piecing instructions it says to trim your blocks to 8.5 x 8.5.  This is wrong.  Blocks will be trimmed to 9×9 and finish 8.5 x 8.5.  We are exchanging our blocks rough (apx 9.5 x 9.5) and letting the new owner of the blocks do the trimming after the exchange.
  • The pattern for the block swap is in the book Simple Strategies for Block Swap Quilts. It’s the Tipsy 9 Patch pattern in the back of the book using the Crossroads to Jericho block. There’s two different ways in the book to put the blocks together into a quilt top – straight and on point.
  • Fabrics for blocks – Black is black on black print. Colors need to be 100% Quilter’s Quality COTTON (no flannel) – jewel tone medium to dark medium (prints, plaids, solids, tone on tone, etc) – fabric CANNOT have any white in it.

Themed Show and Tell

In order to build excitement for next month’s Mystery Quilt, let’s share a Mystery Quilt (2002, 2008, 2014) you made with Loose Threads or bring a Mystery Quilt you made with another group.

UFOs and Dues

No UFO Gift Certificate Winners in January.  What is this UFO Gift Certificate drawing? We collect dues, but then in order to encourage you to finish projects we offer them back to you in the form of gift certificates to quilt shops. To participate, please pay your dues of $20 for 2015 in January or February. Each month (March through December) you  finish a quilt and share it with us you can be in our monthly drawing to win a gift certificate to a quilt shop.

Dinner in January:

Potluck for the Sew-a-thon – Sign up to help provide dinner in 2015

Loose Threads November Meeting was Awesome!

It was great to see some new faces and some familiar faces return to our Monday, November 17, 2014 meeting at Country Oaks Baptist Church.  Margo Amero, Roxanna Flint and new member Margy Michalski made a delicious gluten free lasagna dinner complete with dessert. (Diane and I thank you for the GF!)  Thank you ladies.  This month’s meeting was free sew and show and tell – we saw lots of beautiful quilt tops.  Can’t wait until Sherry posts the pictures in our Facebook group.  We started collecting dues for 2015.  See the end of this post for why we collect dues.

Christmas Party:

Diana Mauldin is the hostess for our annual (fabulous) Christmas party on Tuesday December 16 at 5pm at Diana’s home in BVS. She will provide dessert and drinks. What we need to bring:

  • Asian-themed appetizers, sides, salads, etc.
  • Round Robins to swap (if you are participating)
  • Finished Quilt tops for the final drawing of THREE gift certificates in 2014 – Show us your Mystery Quilt, I Spy Quilt, Block of the Month Quilt (your colors) or the Block of the Month blocks you won in the drawing made into a quilt for a chance to win. (You can participate in this drawing even if you’ve already won or didn’t pay dues in 2014)
  • A homemade item for the gift exchange (optional)
  • (UPDATED) Christmas Party – Fabric exchange for our Scrap Therapy 2015 Block Swap – 5 1/2 inch squares cut from 100% Quilter’s Quality COTTON (no flannel) squares – jewel tone medium to dark medium (prints, plaids, solids, tone on tone, etc) – fabric CANNOT have any white in it.) UPDATE –Okay girls. So I went home and thought about the block exchange. We are doing Scrap therapy so we need to use up scraps. I looked at the pattern and came up with a different way to cut ONE 5.5 inch block to get what we need. (See pictures below). I think at Christmas you can bring as many or as few 5.5 inch squares as you want. They can be all the same, all different, it’s up to you. We’ll lay them out like last year and let everyone swap. Just take as many as you brought. If you bring 30, take home 30. Cutting this way means we don’t need two of them so we can be scrappier!!! The pattern for the block swap we’ll be doing in March and April 2015 is in the book Simple Strategies for Block Swap Quilts. It’s the Tipsy 9 Patch in the back of the book. We’ve also talked about doing a black on black fabric 2.5 inch strip exchange in March so we can scrap up our black fabs, too.

Dues for 2015

We will be collecting (optional) dues of $20 for 2015 at the November, January and February meetings.  UFO prize drawings will commence in March 2015.

Loose Threads is free to anyone who would like to attend and you can always share your finished quilts. HOWEVER, if you wish to participate in the monthly prize drawings for finished quilt tops (finished in the last month – top together or quilt finished and bound qualifies as “done”), you must buy in one time per year at $20 (Cash only, please). It is too difficult to pro-rate or make exceptions. Consider it a Loose Threads Membership Fee.

We will be dividing the proceeds using the money to buy quilt shop gift certificates for the winner of the random drawing. This is so you’ll be committed to finishing quilts and so we can have prizes when the finished tops are presented. The membership fee is the same whether you join in January or July, whether you finish one top or six.

Once you have won the drawing, your name will no longer be entered so that someone else can win. Note, you are not guaranteed to win anything. If we get a lot of ladies joining and paying the fee, we can get more gift certificates as a prizes and have more winners. If you cannot make a meeting but finished your top, send it with someone else so we can see it, cheer for you, and enter your name in the drawing (if you paid your membership fee.)

Dates for 2015

I’ve posted a tentative schedule of events for 2015 on our 2015 page. I’ll get dates on there as soon as we clear it with the church.

If you aren’t part of our Facebook group, please join!  We post pics of quilts and share information in the group.
