March 2014 News

Congratulations to March winners!

At our last meeting Heather Barnes won the Red, White and Blue Glory is Scraps blocks.  Joan Pogon-Cord won our gift certificate for showing a finished UFO quilt.  Thanks to Cathy Criger and Diane Cole we had a delicious dinner of chili and salad.

If you are in the Block of the Month group, please get your finished blocks to the winners ASAP.  Those who haven’t won blocks yet are :  Kim White, Pogie, Teri K, Mary and Angi.  Cowboy Boot is next.  It is a SIMPLE block.  Fun. Easy.  No stress.  Do it with a light background and have fun with the rest of the boot.

At the March meeting we decided to do June’s Kansas Dust Storm in the colors shown.  We want to do the Evening Star block in the brights so to help out with that we’ll have a bright fabric swap in May and June so that everyone can get the colors they need to complete the block shown.

It was suggested we start another Round Robin in August when we finish the Block of the Month – maybe this time dividing into Beginning and Intermediate groups.  If we decide to do this, we will explain the procedure and you would need to provide a center block in a box.   Your block would be passed around 5-6 rounds with each lady adding on another border.  You could let people add their own fabric or just have them use the fabric you include in your box.  More at the next meeting.  If you have any books on round robins or how to do borders, bring them to share!

April 7, 2014 Special Event

Don’t forget.  Tehachapi Mountain Quilters have scheduled a night meeting at COBC and everyone is welcome!  Meeting starts at 5:30 pm and features Raylene Salazar of Quilters Haven LLC.  We’ve been asking for night meeting for awhile.  Let’s support this one!

Next Loose Threads meeting is April 21, 2014

Latest News at Loose Threads

First of all, Hugs and Kisses to Laura Newbry for leading the Mystery Quilt (our mystery quilt was called “Hugs and Kisses!”).  What fun! Thanks for all your hard work.  We had a great night. It was so good to see Donna Adams and some new faces.  Welcome to the Loose Threads: Dawna, Liz and Debbie.

I have posted instructions for ALL the Block of the Month blocks on our site now (check http://loosethreadstehachapi.wordpress.com/2014-2/ ).  We still need to pick colors for some of them.  We can do that at the March meeting.

Just joining Loose Threads?

In 2014 we are continuing our  Block of the Month.  Even if you don’t want to participate in Block of the Month, please come and bring your own project to work on.

Dues: We will still be having drawings as prizes for finished UFO’s for those that pay their annual fee of $20 (if you don’t want to be in the drawing you don’t have to pay the $20 – we do it as incentive to make us finish projects).  This year the drawings will be monthly – so finish up those unfinished objects and come show them off at our monthly meetings.

Our meetings have changed to the second or third Monday of the month at Country Oaks Baptist Church in the chapel.  We begin sewing at 4pm, have dinner between 5:30-6:30pm and finish up just before 8pm.  Monthly schedule is online at http://loosethreadstehachapi.wordpress.com/2014-2/

The Loose Threads invite you to join them in a night of mystery!  If you like sewing and making quilts, this evening is for you.  On Friday, February 7, 2014 from 4pm to 12am we’ll be sewing, eating, laughing and receiving clues to a quilt throughout the evening and into the night.  The quilt top we will be working on will be revealed at 11:45pm.  If you want to join the fun, download the prep instructions (link below), buy your fabric and prepare it per the instructions.  Then bring your sewing machine, come and enjoy the evening with a great bunch of ladies.  If you just want to come and sew on your own projects, that’s fine too.

Next Meeting January 6, 2014

Happy New Quilting Year!

We voted at the Christmas Party to move our meetings to Mondays, preferably the 2nd or 3rd Monday. In January the second Monday is not available space-wise and the third Monday is a holiday so…our next meeting will be Monday, January 6, at 4pm at COBC. NEXT WEEK!

Dues for 2014 are due: $20 CASH PREFERRED! if you want to join in the monthly UFO gift certificate drawing (If not, no biggie, come anyway!) I suggest we get $30 gift cards this year and only give out one a month for finished quilts shown at show and tell. We did $25 gift cards last year.

Teri brought a bag full of leftover I Spy squares for anyone who wants them.

Everyone wanted to know how to make the no-sew fleece hat Ginny made for the exchange. She’ll show you how at the January meeting if you bring 1/2 yard of polar fleece with you on January 6.

Meals: We haven’t had meal Signups yet. I think we’d have less blank months if we had TWO main people provide dinner per month with an optional helper. The helper would still be responsible for a meal in another month. Thoughts? Any volunteers for next Monday??

MYSTERY QUILT INSTRUCTIONS AVAILABLE ONLINE! – FOLLOW THE LINK BELOW.

At the party we decided to have a Mystery Quilt class and to switch our meetings to Mondays.  I checked the church calendar and here’s what I submitted for approval:

In January 2014

We will exchange the Minnesota blocks (in brown and batiks shown above) that we worked on back at the November 2013 meeting. Then we will be working on LUCKY PIECES. (red/gray shown above).  PLEASE READ CAREFULLY – The Lucky Pieces instructions on the linked website has FIVE COLORS.  Our Lucky Pieces block to exchange will ONLY HAVE FOUR COLORS: RED, WHITE AND TWO SHADES OF GRAY.  Referring to the picture above, please place the colors as follows: make the windmill in the center out of RED (print, solid, you choose), make the other pinwheel in the center out of WHITE (or predominantly white with touches of either gray or red), make the background out of LIGHT GRAY and finally make the blue corner pieces out of a DARK GRAY (make sure there is a lot of contrast between your two gray fabrics.)  If we all follow these directions, drop the extra color, then we should get blocks that have a nice 3D look.

We still have the following blocks on the Summer Sampler Series to do – Six Pointed String block, Evening Star and Kansas Dust Storm. We need to add some Blocks to add to make sure everyone is a winner. Here’s some suggested blocks: Snail’s Trail – Do you have any block suggestions? It was suggested we pick a few simpler blocks because the last three Summer Samplers are pretty challenging.

Block winners:

  1. 2013 April – Star of Virginia (blues) – Angi Wiggins
  2. May – Greek Cross (black & white) – Ginny Brooks
  3. June – Mosaic (30′s) – Diane Cole
  4. August – Flower Garden Path (black & scraps) – Lisa Lopez
  5. September – Star Block (solids) – Sandy Duxbury

  11. March -
  12. April -
  13. May -
  14. June -

THREE CHALLENGES IN 2014

Don’t forget to work on one or all of the three Challenges we have for 2014. We’ll be showing them at the Christmas Party in December 2014 and having a drawing. Complete an “I Spy” from the charm exchange, make a Block of the Month quilt from blocks you win, or make a Block of the Month sampler with your own blocks/own fabrics. Make one, make all.
